Today on Sundial: Haitians living in the U.S. have until July 2019 to return to Haiti or leave the country. The decisions come after the Department of Homeland Security ended Temporary Protected Status for Haitians Immigrants earlier this month. Marleine Bastien, executive director of Haitian Women of Miami (FANM), an advocacy group dedicated to serving the needs of low-income women and their families, joins us to understand more about the Haitian TPS termination. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke said in a statement that in the years since a catastrophic earthquake devastated Haiti “significant steps have been taken to improve the stability and quality of life for Haitian citizens, and Haiti can safely receive traditional levels of returned citizens.” However, Haitians with TPS disagree. Human Rights Watch reports that the country is struggling with political and social unrest and a cholera epidemic. Uncertainty looms for Haitian families living in South Florida.
