Jade is back with part two of our Washington, DC gayborhood series. We have your DC history from the 1980s to present day. We discuss The Gay Women's Alternative (GWA), a defunct non-profit lesbian community organization that existed in D.C. between 1980 and 1993. The organization made a huge difference in the DC area lesbian community. Many gay bars across the country and especially in DC were known for having no windows. We dive into why this was important during this time. In the 1990s the DC hate crime act was passed, Banneker field hosted the first Black Pride, and Audre Lorde spoke at the 20th Anniversary of the March on Washington. We end with Ashley, Chelsea, and Jade sharing how they have contributed to DC queer history.
