It has opened the polls on its site governance rules, in what may be the last time its users can take a vote on Facebook’s policies • An Austrian student group said Tuesday planning to challenge Facebook’s privacy policies in Irish court in coming months, alleging that the social networking giant had failed, despite repeated requests and formal complaints made by its members, to adapt its privacy policy to the restrictions of European data protection law. • Rupert Murdoch shutting down his iPad newspaper The Daily from 15 December, admitting that it has failed to win enough subscribers to make the online subscription venture viable in its 21 months of life. • Revenue from apps sold in the Google Play store exploding this year. According to a new report by the app sales and download analysts at App Annie, Google Play sales revenue grew a hefty 311 per cent from January through October of this year • Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google, and Jared Cohen, director of Google Ideas, collaborating on a book that looks at the future of business, citizenship, politics, privacy, terrorism, and diplomacy as they relate to both established and emerging technologies • National Australia Bank launching a social media command centre in a bid to improve on its customer service offering • Texting celebrating its 20th anniversary • Vancouver repaving its streets with recycled plastics to become the world’s greenest city by 2020. It’s doing this by using a new warm mix paving process that makes use of the kind of waste plastic placed in blue household recycling boxes by conscientious citizens, reducing greenhouse gases and improving air quality along the way • Hardware retailer Rockler creating the Mixing Mate Paint Lid, which attaches to a paint can to easily stir the paint, pour it out smoothly, and even seal it for later - without making a mess • The Pope, who joined Twitter last month, planning to send out his first tweet as @pontifex (latin for "pope") on December 12 • Plans to send a small humanoid robot to communicate with astronauts living in the International Space Station's Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" in the (Northern Hemisphere) summer of 2013. • Volvo planning to launch self-driving cars in 2014 • Canadian scientists building a functioning computer simulation of the human brain, dubbed Spaun, that's able to recognize characters and perform simple actions • General Electric Power and Water developing a new fabric-covered wind turbine blade which promises to cut the cost of wind turbine manufacture significantly, while also allowing a larger blade size, and facilitating easier transportation • A new type of handcuffs, a set that gives you an electric shock.
