We discuss a broad range of subjects within this kaupapa, including: animal exploitation, animal welfare, companion animals, and the divide between “native” and “introduced” species. Our programme is made up of feature interviews, discussions of prevalent issues in the media, film and book reviews, plant-based kai suggestions, and an eclectic mix of music. Haere mai – we hope you’ll tune in every second Monday at 5pm! Te Piringa Kararehe – The Animal Shelter is brought to you by: Kirsty Dunn Kirsty is a writer, researcher, zombie-film fan, and chutney enthusiast. Her research interests include critical animal studies, meat culture, ecofeminism, and Māori literature. She’d like to dedicate the show to Ernest; the most awesome furry friend a human could have. Annie Potts Annie has a background in mental health nursing, feminist studies and critical animal studies. She lives in a multispecies household in Lyttelton but aims to open a sanctuary for rescued farm animals in the not-too-distant future. Annie loves horror films, dystopian fiction, hanging out with sparrows, and the music of Prince (well, anything about Prince actually!)
