Sparking rumors that he is joining the Trump administration, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick skipped town on the first day of the legislative session this week to join the president in the White House. Patrick denied reports that he is seeking a role in the federal government and said he already has the best job in politics that he will ever hold.
Meanwhile, the session got underway with the election of a new Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen, who was chosen unanimously by members. He's pledged to reform the way public education is paid for while containing the pain of property taxpayers across the state. He says it will all happen in a regular session with no special session needed.
And Julián Castro is expected to announce this weekend that he is running for the presidency. We talked with him one-on-one.
