CSW 141: Deliberate Creativity with Amy ClimerDr. Amy Climer teaches teams to be creative and innovative.

(And yes, in case you were wondering, creativity is absolutely something you can learn! What do you think my Creative Sandbox Way Guideposts are, but tools for enhancing creativity!)

Big surprise (not!) that I wanted to bring Amy on the show. She is all about deliberate creativity. In fact, she has her own podcast, called The Deliberate Creative, all about leading innovation in business teams.

Amy is a speaker, trainer, and coach in creativity, innovation, and team development. Through her company Climer Consulting she teaches research-based practices, tools, and techniques teams can use to innovate on demand.

Early in our conversation, Amy shared the 3 Elements of Creative Teams:

  1. Team purpose to understand what the purpose is of that team.
  2. Strong team dynamics communication and trust each other, and engage in creative abrasion.
  3. Team process understand and use a creative process. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Creative Problem Solving, Design Thinking or anything else, as long as they use one!

Then she went on to walk through the 4 stages of Creative Problem Solving Process (Clarify, Ideate, Develop, and Implement), using her Climer Cards as a case study, and she explained the difference between divergent and convergent thinking.

There’s a lot more juice in there. Have a listen and let me know what part you resonate with the most.

Quotes from Our Conversation

From the Creative Problem Solving Institute: “Creativity is novelty that is valuable.”

“Ideas are a dime a dozen; they’re cheap – they’re a dime a dozen. It’s what’re you going to do with those ideas?”

Something Cool

From Amy:

1) Focus at Will (Amy says, “This is my affiliate link, just so you know, but I love the app so would be sharing regardless.”)
2) Strict Workflow free plugin for Chrome

From Melissa:

Superpowerless Movie

My best friend’s husband stars as the protagonist, and my best friend is his wife in this coming-of-middle-age story about a superhero who’s lost his superpowers. (And the dining room of my parents’ home the house where I grew up, with art that I made on the walls makes an appearance as well, as the wife’s parents’ house!)

Honestly, I didn’t expect to like this film as much as I did, but I loved it. Thought-provoking. Heart-wrenching, because it deals with the loss of power that we all feel as we age. Redemptive.
