Welcome to The Freelance Remuda—a podcast about navigating the equine media frontier. In the first episode, Abigail Boatwright and Kate Bradley Byars introduce themselves, talk about how they got into equine media, and how they became freelancers. They also discuss some common questions about breaking into freelance, such as necessary skills, how working independently is different from an on-staff job, and advice for the newcomer to equine media.

Abigail Boatwright is a freelance writer and photographer with more than a decade of experience in equine media. She draws from a background showing Quarter Horses and competing on the Texas A&M Equestrian Team, as well as work experience on staff at the American Quarter Horse Association and American Paint Horse Association. Today, she writes and photographs for up to a dozen magazines—mainly of the western stock horse niche. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas, with her husband Zach and children, Wilder and Felicity. Kate Bradley Byars is a freelance writer and photographer with a background showing Quarter Horses and competing on Texas A&M’s Equestrian Team. She currently competes in Ranch Horse competition with her Quarter Horse. She has years of experience on staff at Western Horseman magazine, and today she is editor of WH’s sister publication, Ranch Horse News, while continuing to freelance for other publications, including Western Horseman. She lives in Beaumont, Texas, with her husband Robert and her Labrador, Huk.
