Here are a few things a higher cost of living might get you access to:

  1. Better public education
  2. Lower crime rates
  3. Superior law enforcement
  4. Higher paying jobs
  5. Jobs with more upward mobility
  6. Highly educated neighbors
  7. Stable government
  8. Reliable utilities (internet, electricity, water etc.)
  9. Well stocked grocery and retail stores

Complaining about a higher cost of living is often complaining about access to a massive amount of opportunity. The reason that the cost of living is so much lower in sub-saharan Africa is because the residents there rarely get access to the 9 things on that list.
