The National Party is calling for the reintroduction of the Armed Response Teams.
A trial of the teams ended last year, with police finding they didn't align with the style of policing Kiwis expect.
Police Minister Poto Williams told Mike Yardley having permanently armed police caused some communities some real concern.
“Maori and Pacific populations are stopped more, charged more, arrested more so for those communities to have permanently armed police is a real difficulty for them.”
Williams says she's in favour of police being armed when they need to, but she doesn't support general arming.
