Meg Jay, PhD, a clinical psychologist and assistant clinical professor at University of Virginia, and author of Supernormal: The Untold Story of Adversity and Resilience. In this show we explore the secret, inner world of those who are resilient. That’s what Supernormal is all about. It is the amazing story of resilience—the heroic, powerful, often challenging lifelong journey of facing up to challenge. This is the world of the supernormal, those who soar to unexpected heights after adversity. Here's what we cover in this weeks show with Dr Jay. When people ask Dr Jay what she does, how does Dr Jay like to reply? What’s the meaning of the word Supernormal? Who is a Supernormal? It’s a larger % than we normally imagine that have faced one or more serious adversities in their life. Can adversity actually have a positive impact on Supernormal's? Once Supernormals have been through a serious adversity, how do they then see adversity? If we face no adversity in our lives, what impact can that have on our wellbeing? Why is it that Supernormals do not consider themselves resilient? How might we might prepare our children for their future challenges and disappointments? What’s the psychology of hard times? What’s it feel like to be a resilient person? How we can learn from suffering and trauma? What can we take from facing adversity? What’s the audio track, the self talk that Supernormals run through in their own mind? The parable shared by a Minister about two brothers. Quote from the Budhha "you will be punished not because of your anger but by your anger” where is anger valuable? Do Supernormals tend to put aside self care? What sort of life are you willing to fight for? Do Supernormals find it difficult to trust a partner in a relationship because of what they have been through? Do some Supernormals not ever deal or acknowledge the impact that their adversity may have had on them? Do Supernormals feel that they are the only ones that are going through these sorts of adversity at the time? How much of Dr Jay is personally in the book? Why do you sometimes find yourself getting angry on behalf of her clients? What’s the psychological philosophy we should take into our day to day when things go wrong? Dr Jay on the process of journalling and writing. If Dr Jay had another life to lead, what would Dr Jay do in that life? What song could we play that would best represent Dr Jay as a person? What Dr Jay hasn’t figured out yet?
