Neither did I until I read a recent Atlas Obscura article by Nathalie Lagerfeld, America's Short, Violent Love Affair With Indoor Track Cycling (http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/americas-short-violent-love-affair-with-indoor-track-cycling).
