Mel Power recorded this podcast interview with Eleanor Becker of Elite Business live from ICNZB’s #bookkeepcon18 in Hamilton, NZ!
How Eleanor came to bookkeeping
Originally Eleanor actually studied chemistry! She’s had a varied career to date and has been involved with video rentals, a cafe and even online marketing. Then she started doing the books for her husband’s business coaching business, realised she loved the work and thought about doing that for other people.
Buying an existing bookkeeping business
There are pros and cons of buying a bookkeeping business. Eleanor had a good handover which made it much easier. The negative was that she didn’t have a relationship with the clients, she didn’t understand their businesses yet and needed to build that.
Bookkeeping isn’t just putting things into software and reconciling, you need to actually understand their business.
Changing lives!
Eleanor loves creating order from the chaos and just helping people transform their business. One client (who Eleanor just thought was a small client) has said that her life has been changed since she doesn’t need to worry about the books anymore. Eleanor helped her understand how to use the accounting software better gave her peace of mind.
Transforming small businesses
What’s the unique value of bookkeepers? Bookkeepers see the accounts just about every day so they see the trends, they can look ahead and see what’s coming. They can measure the pulse everyday and help a business owner see opportunities.
What’s next for Eleanor?
She’d love to get off the tools and do less of the bookkeeping. She’d love to work with business owners to transform their business, make the most of their finances and help them move forward. Their business is a vehicle to help them reach their goals so she wants to help them get there.
Too often the business is a liability for them, instead of being an asset.
Back yourself, dream bigger, you can do it, bookkeepers!
