When the critics can’t stop talking about something, and people can’t stop talking about it too, you hit that sweet spot we all look for in terms of finding ways to make our art commercial. Commercialism is particularly important in terms of outreach. When no one knows who you are they don’t have any reason to choose you. You have to give them those reasons upfront.

Make your most commercial ideas the fishhooks that you cast out into the world to find the people who want to read your stuff. Then you can use those works to lead them into your world where you can offer your less commercial, more artistic, or off-the-wall work.
