If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you may want to listen up! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know that there’s such a thing as rheumatoid lung disease? Most of the time, rheumatoid arthritis affects only the joints. But, it can also affect the lungs. Rheumatoid lung disease often occurs when rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation, scarring, or nodules on the lungs. This usually develops in ten percent of people with rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms often include: dry cough, decreased appetite, unintentional weight loss, shortness of breath, and weakness. Smokers, men, and people sixty years or older with rheumatoid arthritis are at a higher risk of developing rheumatoid lung disease. Talk to your doctor if you begin experiencing symptoms.
