It’s almost flu season, time to get that flu vaccine! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Staying Young Medical Minute. The flu virus is highly contagious and can turn deadly fast. You may be thinking that the flu vaccine can cause the actual flu—this isn’t true. In fact, it takes the vaccine about two weeks before becoming effective and it doesn’t contain a live virus, making an infection from it impossible. Chances are, you were already exposed by the time you received the vaccine. Most of the population waits until an epidemic before getting vaccinated. Although the flu vaccine does not guarantee complete immunity, it does decrease your chances of getting the flu by forty to sixty percent. I don’t know about you, but I like those odds! Talk to your doctor about the flu vaccine today! This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
