If someone told you to watch your salt intake, do you even know what that means? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Salt, which is listed as sodium on nutritional labels is not your friend. Not only does too much salt cause you to swell and bloat, it can also raise your blood pressure. Too much salt is also is bad for your bones. When you eat too much salt the body decreases the amount of calcium it can absorb. It also causes you to excrete calcium through your urine, basically depleting your bones of what they need to stay strong and stay healthy. How much is too much you ask? It’s best to keep your daily sodium intake between 1500-2300 mg per day. Unfortunately, the average American consumes twice that amount. So – don’t be the average American.
