Time to talk Salmonella. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. No, I am not referring to the “fish”. Salmonella is a bacteria found in raw and undercooked poultry, ground beef, and eggs. When consumed, symptoms of salmonellosis usually begin within twelve to seventy-two hours. Persons exposed may develop abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. These symptoms can last anywhere between four and seven days. Children under five are at the highest risk. The best way to prevent Salmonella infection is to cook meat and eggs thoroughly and to wash your hands and counter surfaces frequently while cooking. Call your doctor if you are experiencing signs of salmonellosis and keep track of foods that are being recalled by the CDC for salmonella.
