Are you or your children obsessed with apps like Snapchat? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Body dysmorphic disorder affects nearly one in fifty people. It’s considered a mental disorder on the obsessive-compulsive scale. People who struggle with body dysmorphia focus heavily on little or nonexistent physical flaws. This often leads to surgically altering their appearance. According to new research, apps like Snapchat are actually making the condition worse. Fifty-five percent of plastic surgeons in 2017 stated that their patients were either wanting to “better their selfies” or to look they do in filters on Snapchat. This is type of behavior has coined the new term “Snapchat Dysmorphia”. Talk to a doctor if you believe you or a loved one is struggling with body dysmorphia.
