Let’s talk about the H-word. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We’ve all had them at one point or another. It is estimated that over 10 million people suffer from them a year. What am I talking about? Hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located in or around the rectum. Although most of the time small, they can cause a lot of pain and irritation. Lifestyle and diet changes can be an easy way to alleviate symptoms. It is well known that eating fiber can reduce the risk and size of hemorrhoids. But did you know it only works if you are drinking enough water? Not drinking enough will lead to constipation which worsens symptoms. It is also important to exercise to keep things flowing. Taking regular warm showers and sitz baths can also help relieve symptoms.
