No ‘silver bullet’ can ever hope to solve the complex issue of biosecurity. That’s because it requires cooperation among everyone involved, as well as lots of time and patience to make it as effective as possible. In this episode, I talk to Dr. Derald Holtkamp about his experiences in mitigating risks of disease and helping veterinarians handle and prepare for outbreaks in their area by using standardized practices.

“Employees are being asked to do a lot for biosecurity, which can take up a lot of time from the workday – and we keep adding more things. Asking too much can cause certain measures to be done incorrectly, or not at all" - Dr. Derald Holtkamp

What you’ll learn:

  1. Current trends with APP (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae)
  2. How to communicate among multi-site staff members
  3. Biosecurity - wean-to-finish vs sow farms
  4. How to enforce biosecurity measures
  5. How to help vets investigate and evaluate outbreaks

Dr. Derald Holtkamp has received his DVM and MS in Agricultural Economics, and his BS in Agricultural Business, with a minor in statistics, from Iowa State University. At the same university, he currently holds the position of Professor in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostics and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Before that, he has served as a private veterinary consultant and as a technical services veterinarian for several big companies. Dr. Holtkamp’s research focuses on the management of infectious swine diseases, biosecurity, disease risk assessments, and the economics of animal health and diseases. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, is a recurring speaker with over 240 invited presentations within the US and abroa, and has mentored over 260 professional and graduate students.
