Australian baritone, Barry Ryan, just loves singing and acting in opera. He might have become a Rugby star in his early days, but chose instead a pathway to an outstanding and enduring operatic career. He’s currently in Melbourne to perform the role of The Forester in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen for Victorian Opera. Barry is well known for his outstanding performances for Opera Australia as well as the State opera companies. In recent years Melbourne audiences saw his Gunther in Wagner’s Gotterdammerung, George Milton in Of Mice and Men, and Richard Nixon in John Adams’ Nixon in China. As well as maintaining an active singing career, Barry and his wife, soprano Anke Hoppner-Ryan lecture in Voice and Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Barry was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to the performing arts in 2013.
