On Wednesday, Stanford sent shock waves across the NCAA with the announcement that 11 sports - field hockey, wrestling, men’s and women’s fencing, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming and men’s volleyball - will be eliminated at the conclusion of the 2020-2021 academic school year. With help from Stanford alum, David Lombardi, we explain why the Cardinal made the decision to terminate these sports now, what it means for the staff and student-athletes of the soon-to-be eliminated programs, and how this could all be a precursor of things to come across the NCAA.
