WELCOME TO SEASON 3!

This episode we come in like a wrecking ball to demolish the ideas around 'evil' in heathenry. It's not as simple as saying the Aesir are good and the Jotunn are bad. Want to know more? Listen in. Wyrdos Sif, Theo and Kenna discuss the origins of the word evil, and how it shouldn't be used to define or label our Nordic gods.

Excerpts:

Havamal 117

Wounded to death, have I seen a man

by the words of an evil woman;

a lying tongue had bereft him of life,

and all without reason of right.

-

Völuspá 38-39, Ursula Dronke

Sal sá hón standa

sólo fiarri,

Nástrǫndu á,

norðr horfa dyrr.

Fello eitrdropar

inn um lióra.

Sá er undinn salr

orma hryggiom.

Sá hón þar vaða

þunga strauma

menn meinsvara

ok morðvarga

ok þannz annars glepr

eyrarúno.

Þar saug Nidhoggr,

nái framgengna,

sleit vargr vera.

Vitoð ér enn, eða hvat?

-----

A hall she saw standing

remote from the sun

on Dead Body Shore.

Its door looks north.

There fell drops of venom

in through the roof vent.

That hall is woven

of serpents’ spines.

She saw there wading

onerous streams

men perjured

and wolfish murderers

and the one who seduces

another’s close-trusted wife.

There Malice Striker (Nidhoggr) sucked

corpses of the dead,

the wolf tore men.

Do you still seek to know? And what?
