When chronic pain enters your world you become defeated, isolated, trapped, broken and feel as if you have to submit to the life pain has given you.

This is what your brain tells you, the brain itself creates the experience of pain. You may have heard someone say to “Your pain is all in your head”, there is some truth to the statement just not in the fashion most are intending.

Pain cannot be experienced until it reaches your brain. When we have acute pain our body signals to the brain danger, but persistent chronic pain is different. A pain cycle starts and creates a vicious loop between the body and the brain that signals like a firing squad. At this time more, brain cells are being recruited to sense the pain and they began to take over like an army. Other brain functions, such as problem solving, and planning start being affected. By now the brain begins to learn pain and the pain switch stays on vs off. Pain then dominates your consciousness and the recruited brain cells begin robbing you of important functions like problem solving and planning.

The good news is that the changes in your brain are not permanent just because your brain has learned the pain doesn’t mean you can’t re-train your brain. With the proper management, strategies, and tools your brain can return to normal function. So, the next time you hear “Your pain is all in your head” just agree with them.
