Chronic pain can lead to stress, but the truth is stress can worsen chronic pain, it’s miserable, cruel, and a vicious cycle. Pain and stress can impact each other, how you respond to your stress plays a big factor when it comes to managing your pain. How you respond to stress has four components; emotions, thoughts, actions, and your body.
We all have different symptoms when we get stressed. For some people stress may trigger emotions of sadness, anger, or fear. For others they may act out by losing their temper, crying, or even going to bed to avoid the stressor event. Stress can affect your thoughts sometimes leaving you feeling confused, you may even have trouble making decisions. All of these stress symptoms effect your body physical. All of these stress symptoms can add to your body’s response to stress by increasing your blood pressure, muscles tighten, and you may even find yourself holding your breath during a stressor event. Overtime. Your muscles become fatigued and inefficient. This all can add to your pain or your pain can be your stressor event. It is important that we learn to cope with stressor events; coping is a way of dealing with the issue or problem. There are helpful and unhelpful ways to cope, how do you cope?
How we think about stress matters, how we think about the stressor event is more important than the event itself. Our thought about the stressor event changes how we feel and respond. We can look at stressor events in three ways, a loss, a threat, or a challenge. A threat is something that can harm or hurt you physically. A loss is something that you cannot get back while a challenge is something that is hard be you can overcome it.
Decreasing your stress can help you manage your pain. The brains ability to filter pain signals is affected in a bad way when you are stressed, and this can increase your pain. You are your own best helper when it comes to reducing your pain and stress.
#1 – Check your emotions
Are you out of control? Are you saying, “I can’t do this, or I can’t handle this?” Your words to yourself are power, the old saying mind over matter does matter. Don’t let yourself and emotions get out of control. Remember asking, is this a threat, a loss, or a challenge? Try daily journaling, speaking, the truth to ourselves and getting our emotions and thoughts written our helps diffuse potential emotional explosions. Remember the journaling is for you and yourself to see – no one else.
#2 – Find Your Balance
Overcommitting ourselves or our family brings added stress to our lives when it doesn’t need to. Learn to say “no” to the things that don’t bring you joy in life and “yes” to the ones that do. Learn to give yourself grace don’t let others expect things from you that you would not expect from yourself. Find your peace.
#3 – Relaxation
Relaxation is one way to deal with stress and pain. It can help calm your mind and body, so you are prepared to handle the stressor event. Take time daily for deep, focused breathing exercises a few times a day. Other relaxation techniques might be yoga, guided imagery, or meditation these all can force you to relax and decrease your stress and pain.
#4 – Be Physically Active
Notice I didn’t say exercise, that can be difficult when living with chronic pain. Just increasing your physically activities is the first step in becoming more active, chances are when dealing with pain you have become somewhat sedentary. Just a walk around the block can increase endorphins which helps decrease stress, pain, and helps with sleep. It is important to be active despite the pain, this helps you better manage your pain and improve overall mood. Start out slow and then you can work toward setting hopes for incorporating exercise.
Learning how to cope with the stressor events in your life is a mindful act that in the end will help tremendously with reducing your pain. Be aware of how you react to your stressor event is the first step in learning to cope with your emotions, thoughts and body when it comes to stress.
