Episode 1 of the series hits like a punch to the face as David, well versed in Gaiman's depictions of violence but who was clearly not ready for this, and Anais, often found waxing poetical about Bryan Fuller murder tableaux but could be found yelling alone at midnight in her apartment over hot pokers jammed in left eye sockets, hit their threshold for gore and mayhem as the Vikings fail hard at coming to America. Anais and David hit their violence limit again as Mad Sweeney gets punched in the face way too many times. Somewhere in America, a middle aged man swipes right and experiences the nightmare dating scenario of literally every woman who dates men. Also, that ancient African goddess skin care regimen is killer (see what we did there?!?). Shadow is inexplicably kidnapped via VR by Technical Boy, who orders his henchmen to royally screw with the novel's timeline, leading David and Anais toward a lively debate over which deus brought about that deus ex machina of an ending. And then Anais turns philosopher and starts inventing new Gods, who you can totally have for free, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green!
