Anabella Acevedo is a Guatemalan writer, editor and curator. She began her study of Latin American literature during the height of the country’s 36-year armed conflict. She later moved to the United States to complete her graduate studies at the University of Georgia in Athens. There she would gain a deeper understanding of her own country and exposure to feminist thinking. While teaching at Texas Christian University, the Peace Accords were signed in Guatemala marking the beginning of a new era. She decided it was the right moment to return home.

“I started feeling that so many things, exciting things were happening in Guatemala. I was about to get my tenure. But I decided that Guatemala was the place where I wanted to be. So I returned. And in part it was because it was the 90s and the beginning of the 2000s. It was a period of transition. And many things were happening. And in the arts in Guatemala it was incredible. What was happening it was so new and so… refreshing that I wanted to be here.”
