Doug Stranko was studying to become an athletic trainer when he had a conversation with a Chiropractor and found his calling. As he studied the philosophy of chiropractic learning that the body is self-healing and self-regulating he knew how he would spend his working life.
Dr. Stranko teaches that when the brain and body communicate clearly through the central nervous system the body is capable of amazing things. The key is to make sure there is no interference in the communication. Since the central nervous system passes through the spine it is important to make sure the spine is moving properly. The spine is made up of 24 bones that can move out of alignment causing the muscles to constrict and interfere with that essential communication. There are many positive effects on peoples health when the spine is in alignment, improved digestion, improved prostate to name two.
Adjusting the spine to work properly is just one focus of Dr. Stranko’s mission. The other is to teach people the concepts of health and wellness. The way people eat, think and move are the building blocks of a healthy body and immune system. There are three things people need to learn in order to create a healthy lifestyle:
- Use food as a fuel
- Move properly, have good posture
- Think positively
When asked how he motivates people to an attitude of wellness Dr. Stranko answered that there are two laws that govern our direction, the law of probability and the law of possibility. The law of probability states that people will have essentially the same outcome as other people if they take the same action. For instance if you do not exercise you will have the same outcome as other people who do not exercise.
The law of possibility states that if people align with taking responsibility for their health they can create more options and change the course of their health by taking proactive steps to be healthy. There is a choice and that choice is made each day in the actions we all take or don’t take.
One message Doug would like to leave with the audience is that there is a misconception about chiropractic. If your nervous system is not working properly you will have problems. When you are in balance with eat, think and move the more healthy you will become.
