In this episode, we consider the magnitude of SoundCloud's recent financial struggles given that the site has come to be recognised as a hub for online musical sub-cultures. To understand more we speak with looms. a lo-fi hip-hop MC who has recently published what is widely considered to be the first book on lo-fi culture, titled “lo-fi hip-hop: culture in conversation.” From his embedded position within the lo-fi community, looms. offers a range of critical insights into both lo-fi's relationship with SoundCloud and the company's exploitation of user content. This episode serves as a bite sized contribution to a burgeoning area of critical discourse which looks to bring attention to the fact that the future of online digital culture rests firmly in corporate hands.
