A Few Thoughts on Creativity

Many marketers make the mistake of thinking that they are not creative. Maybe you weren’t particularly successful in your elementary school art classes and your Pinterest projects mostly go in the trash, and so you’ve labeled yourself “not creative.”

The problem is, most people think too narrowly about creativity, and when they don’t fit a particular definition of creativity, they decide it’s just not a talent they possess. If this sounds like you, take a look at some thoughts that may have you reconsidering your creative talent:

Everyone is creative. It can be defeating to your potential if you decide that you’re not creative just because you’re not into crafts or you prefer following directions to getting crazy with a recipe or a project. Maybe you have a more unique form of creativity, such as being ready with the perfect movie line for any situation or finding new ways to title a blog. Creativity isn’t limited to one or two areas so don’t sell yourself short.

Turn that creative idea into some to-do items. If your marketing team is engaging in a brainstorming session, you can come away with some great ideas that your whole team is buzzing about. It’s important, though, that these ideas don’t come away untethered to an action item. Otherwise, you’ve had a lot of fun yelling concepts and scribbling on whiteboards, but that’s as far as it goes.

Both right- and left-brain people contribute to brainstorming. If you’re a left brain, practical type, you may see yourself as the boring opposite to more creative people. In reality, both right- and left-brain individuals are invaluable to a brainstorming session. The out-of-the-box thinkers can come up with a spectacular idea, but it’s necessary that those left-brainers are there to say, “Okay, but what’s our return on investment?” or “That doesn’t fit with our brand message.” Creativity needs boundaries, and left-brained people offer that help.

There’s no industry where creativity can’t thrive. Oftentimes decision-makers in certain industries like banking or healthcare are reluctant to let creativity spin into new areas. It’s important, particularly in these industries, to show your human side and even a little humor. Don’t bypass creativity, but instead embrace it, and you’ll have an edge on your competitors and convince your potential clients that you’re actually just like them.

The creative minds at SJC Marketing want to help you tap into your creative side. To learn more about how out-of-the-box thinking fuels some of our wilder ideas, listen to our latest podcast on the topic at Unfiltered Marketing!
