Are you living your life based on others' expectations? If so, you're not alone. In fact, it's the top regret of all humans!
In her book, "The Top Five Regrets of the Dying," which is on her experiences with terminally ill patients, Bronnie Ware cites that the top regret faced by those at the end of their lives is: "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."

So, if you feel this way – it's normal. But that doesn't mean it's okay!
Humans crave love, and so belonging is really important to us. We want to be understood, cared for, connected, and protected. Unfortunately, this need can leave us bending to the will of what we *think* others want from us, while completely leaving our own wants, needs, and desires in the dust.
Most people spend their lives pursuing the expectations and opinions of others rather than following their own dreams and desires.

We make sacrifices to meet societal or familial expectations, such as pursuing a particular career path, staying in unfulfilling relationships, or neglecting personal aspirations. At the end of life (or in the middle!) this make us feel like we've missed opportunities and unfulfilled our potential.
The time to untether from others' expectations and to start living up to your own is not when you are on your death bed. It is right NOW.
Start prioritizing your own happiness, authenticity, and personal fulfillment today. Make choices that align with your inner truth. Start identifying and releasing the tethers of codependency for the betterment of yourself and those around you.
Now, admittedly, this is a journey. Freeing yourself from the burden of other people's expectations takes time and practice. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you work towards prioritizing your own well-being and living a more authentic life.
In case you're curious, here are the top five regrets outlined in Ware's book:

  1. "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."
  2. "I wish I hadn't worked so hard."
  3. "I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings."
  4. "I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends."
  5. "I wish I had let myself be happier."
