160: Helping Transitioning Veterans Find Employment with Jim Cowper President of CPI

On today’s episode, Joe Crane talks about Helping Transitioning Veterans Find Employment with Jim Cowper President of CPI. Contract Professionals, Inc. is a company that’s set on helping military personnel and veterans find employment. Tune in and learn some classic insights and tips on how veterans can land a job through them!

Journey towards CPI

Jim is the youngest of four siblings, and grew up with a desire to follow his father’s footsteps. But at the age of 17, his father passed away. Fortunately, Jim was able to continue his studies.

“Getting the answers on the test was one thing, but figuring out how to go forward was the bigger reward.” -Jim Cowper

While in college, he worked as a day laborer. He eventually landed a job in a technical staffing firm, and transferred to CPI in 1983. Jim worked for another staffing company afterwards, until he retired and returned to CPI.

On the Lookout for Veterans

Contact Professionals, Inc. was founded as a veteran-owned company. They have been recruiting, hiring, and supporting veterans for many years.

“For 35 years we’ve been this firm who went out, recruited, and hired veterans because we thought that was the right thing to do. Now in 2017, it’s hip to hire veterans.”

They staff veterans with technical skills from tank mechanic to aviation engineers. They have also branched out to other defense clients.

According to Jim, a lot of companies are now looking for veterans. Although he doesn’t have any military background, he has been with veterans for a long time. He finds them invigorating, and appreciates their dedication and bravery.

No Easy Solution

Jim acknowledges the challenges that veterans and companies face. According to him, there is no database for soldiers coming out. This gives companies a hard time finding veterans.
