The famous Montreux Jazz Festival has been growing steadily since its inception in 1967. It is now renowned as the 2nd largest annual Jazz festival in the world.

This unique festival attracts visitors from far and wide every July for approximately two weeks. With over 200,000 people in attendance the town comes alive and the atmosphere is it’s own spectacle.

The two main venues include the Montreux Casino which was the original venue and the Convention centre which is now home to some of the headline Chateau-de-Chillon-vevey-montreux-via-francigena-francigenawaysacts. Artists that have graced the jazz festival stage in the past include Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. Today, it has opened up it’s scope to include blues, soul and rock performers.

Throughout the festival the lake front walk to and from the venues is full of street-food vendors, market stalls and crafts.

As you walk the Via Francigena from Lausanne to Aosta you will stumble upon the small town of Monteaux. Bursting with character, this is one of the most popular trails to walk along the Via Francigena trail. With striking views of Lake Geneva and tons of gothic architecture you can’t go far wrong when choosing this as a walking holiday. After passing the impressive vineyards of Lavaux you will wander the trail and see the Fairytale Castle of Chillon.vineyards-wine-region-lake-geneva-francigenaways

When you reach the town of Montreux you will feel immediately immersed in European culture in this small town of under 27,000 in population size. Residents speak a mixture of French, German and Italian giving you a wide flavour of European languages. As an important wine growing region you will be spoiled for choice of wines and the surrounding fruit filled orchards are a little taste of heaven.

This medieval treasure is just one of the beautiful towns you will pass through on the Via Francigena trail from Lausanne to Aosta. As chosen home of the epic Montreux Jazz festival and the late David Bowie, this quaint town has a long history of performance. When you are in town you can opt to do a short boat trip on Lake Geneva and the panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards will stay with you forever.
