The Science behind Doctor Who
In Doctor who most what we would call lasers are referred to as Energy Weapons.
An energy weapon could be a handheld weapon that fired energy rather than a projectile of some sort. For example
Dalek gunstick energy weapons were part of their casings, though were originally removable. (TV: Genesis of the Daleks)
Sontaran soldiers typically carried some form of blaster. (TV: The Time Warrior)
The Chancellery Guard on Gallifrey used a weapon called a staser. According to one account, staser fire prevented regeneration. (TV: Arc of Infinity) However, the Twelfth Doctor shot the General once with the sidearm of the President's personal security, triggering the General's regeneration. (TV: Hell Bent)
Jack Harkness carried a Compact laser deluxe, which was able to defeat the androids Trine-E and Zu-Zana when they tried to kill him. Shortly afterwards, Jack improvised an energy weapon out of the defabricator. (TV: Bad Wolf)
But how do these compare to modern life?
A directed-energy weapon (DEW) emits highly focused energy, transferring that energy to a target to damage it. Potential applications of this technology include anti-personnel weapon systems, potential missile defense system, and the disabling of lightly armored vehicles such as cars, drones, watercraft, and electronic devices such as mobile phones.
The Pentagon is researching technologies like directed-energy weapon and railguns to counter maturing threats posed by missile and hypersonic glide vehicles. These systems of missile defense are expected to come online in the mid to late-2020s.
However don’t expect every GI Joe to brandish a pistol emitting beams of light as there are problems
Laser beams begin to cause plasma breakdown in the atmosphere at energy densities of around one megajoule per cubic centimetre. This effect, called "blooming," causes the laser to defocus and disperse energy into the surrounding air. Blooming can be more severe if there is fog, smoke, or dust in the air. And then counter measures
The Chinese People's Liberation Army has invested in the development of coatings that can deflect beams fired by U.S. military lasers. Lasers are composed of light that can be deflected, reflected, or absorbed by manipulating physical and chemical properties of materials. Artificial coatings can counter certain specific types of lasers, but if a different type was used than the coating was designed to handle it would be able to burn through it. The coatings are made of several different substances including low-cost metals, rare earths, carbon fiber, silver, and diamonds that have been processed to fine sheens and tailored against specific laser weapon systems. China is developing anti-laser defenses because protection against them is considered far cheaper than creating competing laser weapons themselves.
A to Z
Monster – Lucius Petrus Dextrus
Episode – The Fires of Pompeii
Planet of Origin – Earth Pyrovillia
Lucius Petrus Dextrus was an augur who lived in Pompeii in 79 AD. The Tenth Doctor and Caecilius’ son Quintus found out he had breathed in the dust of Mount Vesuvius, actually the remains of the Pyroviles. This was slowly turning him into stone. The Tenth Doctor and Caecilius' son Quintus found out he had inhaled Pyrovile dust. This was slowly turning him into stone, with his right arm having to be covered by a toga as it was stone. The Doctor broke his arm off and escaped with Quintus. Later the High Priestess ordered him to advance the prophecy. He presented the energy converter to the Pyroviles in Mount Vesuvius. The Doctor and Donna caused the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, killing the Pyroviles and Lucius inside it, along with the converter and the rest of Pompeii.
A Touch of Class
The way the review will work is as follows, I will begin with a synopsis, the good bits, the bad bitsand the most whovian bit and then any notable things in way of a review followed by my rating using the universal method (yep – out of 5 tardis)
The Synopsis London is infiltrated by an eerie alien that feeds off emotion and the team must battle to save Tanya. Alien tendrils span the whole of London, anyone they touch sleeps or gets whisked off to who knows wear.
The Good Bits
"Holy mother of Kanye "
The Bad Bits
With only having a few episodes to develop characters makes some parts of the show a bit disjointed
The Most Whoniversal bit
the line , "yes I'll get it, I mean I I used to run an army"
The universe is so big - could that possibly be a bit of Doug Adams fan pleasing?
And - That's not even the third weirdest thing I've seen this month
Something modern drama so well is sadness, and conveying sadness.
The thing I totally love is the theme tune but I'd rather it didn't have lyrics.
So dead Tanya dad appeared and rightly she doesn't know if it's grief or something else. Timing was lousy
And now we get tendrils , and that's fine except London is a city that never sleeps like in the song. Mist would be fine but tendrils seems a bit unbelievable – yes I know how that sounds, and no I don’t want to change it
We are the lankin and a bit reminiscent of the 456 from torchwood.
Miss Quill is clever and sassy, she's my ideal alien
I'm glad Ram has found his legs so to speak - I do wonder if he'll get a face full of blood.
Ok so I guess the reason it's so quiet is because everyone is connected to the plants.
I don't know about you, but when the rest of the city is wrapped up in plants I always take time for snogs.
Ugh normally love conquers all but anger- do me a lemon – still it was better than alien tattoo dragon thing –
