cd17.06.04 June 4, 2017 “And He said to them, `You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” Lk.16:15 <><><> “There is one very serious defect to my mind in Christ’s moral character, and that is that he believed in hell. I do not myself feel that any person who is really profoundly humane can believe in everlasting punishment.” Bertrand Russell, (atheist and card carrying fool) <><><> THIS MESSAGE FROM HELL IS SHOCKING: 1. BECAUSE OF WHO IS THERE! “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.” Lk.16:19 2. BECAUSE OF WHO IS NOT THERE! “(20) But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, (21) desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.” Lk.16:20-21 3. BECAUSE OF THE PERMANENT REVERSAL DEATH BRINGS! “(22) So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man died and was buried. (23) And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.” Lk.16:22-23 4. BECAUSE OF THE FATE OF THOSE WHO JUSTIFY THEMSELVES! “(24) Then he cried and said, `Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. (25) But Abraham said, `Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. (26) And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.” Lk.16:24-26 • (Matt.25:41) a place of everlasting fire! • (Mk.9:48) a place where the worm never dies! • (Dan.12:2) a place of everlasting contempt! • (Matt.8:12) a place of outer darkness! • (Matt.13:42) a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth! • (Rev.14:11) a place where one has no rest day or night! • (2Thes.1:9) a place of everlasting separation from the Lord! 5. BECAUSE OF THE REASON WHY PEOPLE GO THERE! “(27) Then he said, `I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, (28) for I have five brothers that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ (29) Abraham said to him, `They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ (30) And he said, `No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ (31) But he said to him, `If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’” Lk.16:27-31 SO WHAT? 1. Hell is a real place! “I am He who liveth, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and I have the keys of Hell and of death.” Rev.1:18 (KJV) 2. Many who go there will be shocked? “(22) Many will say to Me in that day, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ (23) And then I will declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” Matt.7:22-23 3. Excuses won’t keep them from going there! “(15) And He said to them, `You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” Lk.16:15 4. What I do in life echoes in eternity! “(44) Then they also will answer Him saying, `Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’(45) Then He will answer them, saying, `Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. (46) And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matt.25:44-46 5. People who know how to die know how to live! “(27) Then he said, `I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, (28) for I have five brothers that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.” Lk.16:27-28 6. Hell is avoided by hearing the word! “(30) And he said, `No father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’(31) But he said to them, `If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.” Lk.16:30-31 <><><> “If we had more hell in the pulpit we would have less hell in the pews.” Billy Graham <><><> NOW WHAT? SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: • The theme of this message is the warning of hell, what is it, why do people go there, and what I need to do to avoid it! 1. How do I respond to the quote by Bertrand Russell on the first page of the sermon outline? 2. Read (Lk.16:19-31). Parables are stories used to convey spiritual truth. They are also used to bring the listener to a decision. What decision did the listeners to this story need to make (see.Lk.16:14-15). What are some ways people tend to justify themselves and excuse their sin? 3. Do I think hell is cruel, unkind, or unfair? Do I want justice when I am wronged? Why? Do Sadam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, or suicide bombers deserve hell? Do I deserve hell? Why? 4. Look up these verses on hell and see how Scripture describes this place: • (Matt.25:41-46) • (Mk.9:48, Isa.66:24) • (Dan.12:2) • (Matt.8:12; 22:13) • (2Thes.1:9) • (Matt.13:42) • (Rev.14:11) 5. Why do people go to hell (see Lk.16:31)? Is it their choice? What must I do to be saved (see Mk.1:14-15)?
