cd.18.01.07 January 7, 2018 Message by Denny Mashburn TO BE RECOMMISSIONED, SOME QUESTIONS HAD TO BE ANSWERED, SUCH AS: 1. Lord, will You take care of me? “(1) After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: (2) Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.(3) Simon Peter said to them, `I am going fishing.’ They said to him, `We are going with you also.’ They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. (4) But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. (5) Then Jesus said to them, `Children, have you any food?’ They answered Him, `No.’ (6) And He said to them, `Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. (7) Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, `It is the Lord!’ Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. (8) But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. (9) Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. (10) Jesus said to them, `Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.’ (11) Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. (12) Jesus said to them, `Come and eat breakfast.’ Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, `Who are You?’---knowing that it was the Lord. (13) Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. (14) This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.” Jn.21:1-14 A. (v. 3) Yes, but are you thinking about your old life? B. (v.3) Yes, but now that I am leaving, will you depend on yourself or Me! C. (v.6) Yes, you need My supernatural, sovereign provision and you will have it if you are faithful to Me (Jn.14:13-14)! 2. Lord, can You still use me? “(15) So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, `Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?’ He said to Him, `Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’ He said to Him, `Feed my lambs.’ (16) He said to him again a second time, `Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ He said to Him, `Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’ He said to him, `Tend My sheep.’ (17) He said to him the third time, `Simon, son of Jonah do you love Me?’ Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, `Do you love Me?’ And he said to Him, `Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.’ Jesus said to him, `Feed My sheep.’ Jn.21:15-17 A. (v.15) I can, but are you committed to Me or do you just have affection for me? B. (v.15) I can, but are you committed to Me more than your old pursuits (Lk.14:26-33)? C. (v.17) I can, because I delight in using and recommissioning imperfect people! 3. Lord, what will it cost me to be recommissioned? “(18) `Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.’ (19) This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, `Follow Me.’” Jn.21:18-19 A. EVERYTHING, EVEN YOUR VERY LIFE! SO WHAT? 1. I serve a recommissioning God! 2. God will take care of me, and bless me, if I follow His orders and not my own! “(5) Then Jesus said to them, `Children, have you any food?’ They answered Him, `No.’ (6) And He said to them, `Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.” Jn.21:5-6 <>“It was time for Jesus to take over the situation, just as He did when He called Peter into discipleship. He told them where to cast the net; they obeyed, and they caught 153 fish! The difference between success and failure was the width of the ship! We are never far from success when we permit Jesus to give the orders, and we are usually closer to success that we realize.” Warren Wiersbe<> 3. Christ’s answer to failure is love! “We love Him because He first loved us.” 1Jn.4:19 “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” 1Jn.5:3 “Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.” 2Thes.3:5 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love……” Gal.5:22 4. The heart of true discipleship is self-denial! “(23) Then He said to them all, `If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (24) For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.” Lk.9:23-24 5. Am I ready to be recommissioned? “……follow Me.” Jn.21:19 SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: • The theme of this message is the encouragement of God restoring and recommissioning His servants when they have failed! 1. Have I experienced failure in the Christian life to the point I wondered if God could ever use me again? Share a story with the group. 2. Read (Jn.21:1-19). Jesus is restoring and recommissioning Peter after his tragic failure. What gets my attention about this story? 3. Take note of (Jn.21:3-6). Why did Peter go fishing when the Lord had instructed His disciples to wait on the mountain (see Matt.28:16). What was he possibly struggling with? Was his fishing productive? What did the miracle of catching 153 fish communicate to these disciples? What are the implications for me? 4. Take note of (Jn.21:15-17). What is the Lord’s answer for failure? How is love (agapay) described in (1Cor.13:4-8a)? Where does love begin (see 1Jn.4:8)? Why does any Christian love God in the first place (see 1Jn.4:19)? What is the greatest evidence of my love for God (see 1Jn.5:3)? How do I increase my love for the Lord (see 2Thes.3:5; Gal.5:22a)? 5. If the word love (agapay) could be described and summarized in one word, what would it be? (Hint: it is not affection, or sensual, or familial affection, but co………ment) So what (i.e. daily life, relationships, family, the lost, other believers, etc.)? Am I ready to be recommissioned by the Lord for 2018?
