Entrepreneurs are more likely than any other demographic to experience loneliness, depression, and other mental health issues. I’m here today to tell you that if you’ve felt like this, you’re not alone. I’ve also experienced my fair share of depression during my entrepreneurial rollercoaster.
We’ve all been there; when we’re working behind a screen all day, we’re not really interacting with anyone. You might have some online connections you chat with here and there, but there’s really nothing like that in-person communication to boost your mood. Inevitably, the lack of social interaction will lead to loneliness.
The future of entrepreneurship is changing already to be more open about mental health, depression, and loneliness. Because we are more likely to experience it, it’s time we open the conversation - and we are. And by talking about mental health, we’ll be contributing to making entrepreneurship a less lonely and even more accessible possibility.
As entrepreneurs, we need to prioritize self-care every single day. Not when you feel like it, every day. You don’t have to have a long, luxurious bath every day unless you want to, but you need to include some aspects of loving yourself. These are things like getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and talking to people outside your computer.
You should also get a hobby that’s away from your computer. Running, crafting, going to yoga classes, or whatever it is you want to do will all help you disengage and decompress from every day stresses your business brings.
I’d also recommend practicing gratitude every day. Whether you say one thing you’re grateful for every step you take to the bathroom or spend five minutes in the morning or night writing in your journal, this simple act helps keep your cortisol levels calm.
Lastly, make sure you have a support network. This network preferably lives outside your computer, so you physically have to go to meet up and connect in real life. They might be a local women’s network or just a group of friends you can really unwind with.
