Exposed timber post and beam structures leverage the benefits of biophilic design and wellbeing. From a design point of view there are a number of challenges that need to overcome. Nanyong Technological University Academic South Building is Asia’s last post, beam and CLT project. The 40,000 sq m project will cost $180 million and be completed in 2021. In part 1 of this 2 part series we’re speaking with Gary Caulfield, the project director and David Kingham, the project engineer about:

  • The 80/20 principle applied for the design and construction of timber structures
  • Utilising suppliers and contractors early in the project
  • Fire testing requirements and IP for approval of the exposed structure
