About Trathen Heckman:

Trathen Heckman is the founding director of Daily Acts Organization, Board Chair of Transition U.S. and a front yard farmer. Trathen collaborates with citizens and leaders to harness the wisdom of nature and community-powered solutions to restore the vitality of our lives and communities. He is a founding member of the Sonoma County Food System Alliance and worked actively there on the Greywater Working Group, which participated in the 2009 California state Greywater law update. Trathen is presenting on Eco-Governance at Bioneers Conference this year and co-hosting a post conference workshop on catalyzing Food System and Community Resilience from homestead to community and beyond. He lives in the Petaluma River Watershed where he grows food, medicine and wonder while working to compost apathy and lack.

One of his greatest challenges:

As Trathen says, “Exposing the vulnerabilities of your authentic self is a huge fear.” Trathen shares how he took that step and how it empowered him to build a powerful community.

Personal mantra:

“Find your highest light, schedule it, and live it.” ~ Peace Pilgrim

“Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it.” ~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D

Personal practice:

Trathen makes it a priority to take care of himself. He makes time to put on his own oxygen mask first, to process difficult emotions and get clear and re-centered in his own power.

Practical advice:

Follow your heart. Believe in the power and importance of your small choices and living in the integrity of those choices while being very self-compassionate. Develop your personal practices and surround yourself with people who inspire you.

R + R + R = R. Reverence plus Ripples plus Relationships equals Resilience.

Taking action the best we can and doing so in a way that cares for our relationships, nature and people; that’s where we get to these rich and more resilient lives and communities.

Best strategies for funding:

Trathen shares insights about how to use your passion to bring in resources and assess what is working. He also describes his approach for community building and partnering with municipalities.
