John Kramp, David Atchision, leadership, consulting, executiveThis is a Bookmark Edition of Your Leadership Story Podcast, one of the episodes when the hosts, John Kramp and David Acthison share some of the fun, funny, and sometimes serious stories about how they grew as leaders.

In this episode, John Kramp, Co-Founder of the The Riverstone Group, tells about the day he was called to meet with the COO of the company because John had sent a long email explaining why it was unreasonable to ask for year-end budget projections.

In John’s defense, this was at the juncture in his career as he moved from spending 15 years as a pastor to working in a large publishing business for more than 20 years. This was before John got his MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management so he saw no problem in pushing back against the COO’s request — not a wise move with a past oil industry executive with a Harvard MBA.

Looking back, John says, “I could have been fired that day. But that’s not what happened. It ended up as one of the most important days in my development as a leader.”

Would you think you would learn important leadership principles in the context of learning how to forecast year-end budgets? You can. In fact, you can learn leadership and train future leaders in the midst of anything that happens every day in business. In this episode, you’ll learn more about these and other leadership principles.

  • How a senior leader can shape the trajectory of an emerging leader’s career in just a few minutes — for better or for worse.
  • Determining how to deal with a young leader who makes a mistake because of a lack of knowledge and experience.
  • Finding the right way to confront a problem without crushing a young leader.
  • Taking a long-term view of leadership development, beginning with small, insignificant encounters.
  • Why it’s important to confront error while correcting with the goal of developing.

If you’re already leading, you probably have your own version of this story. And if you’re just beginning your business career, pay special attention. Hopefully, you’ll work for someone who sees the potential in you and invests in you for the future.
