For most of us, dog training is a hobby. Something we are passionate about and enjoy doing but it's not a life or death activity for us. However, there are a few people in the world who truly depend on their dog's performance. Their dog's preparedness and training can truly have an impact on whether someone lives or dies. For these dogs and their handlers, mission success is far greater than a ribbon or plaque to hang on the wall. In order to operate at this high of a level, it's a requirement to remain proficient and knowledgeable on the most effective ways to train these dogs.

This week we sit down with Randall Lykens of Liberty Canine. Randall is the previous kennel master for the US Army Rangers and provides us with a ton of new perspectives as it pertains to dog training and how lessons learned in the working canine space can be directly applied to gun dog training. At the end of the day, the principles of dog training are the principles of dog training regardless of the individual dog's job. So why not try and learn from individuals who's training has such high stakes?

  • How does one become an Army Ranger Kennel Master?
  • Drives and building the operant dog first
  • E-collars are a gas pedal. Not a brake
  • Tug and the value of it even in the gun dog world
  • Transitioning from military working dogs into a civilian professional trainer
  • Training and donating a finished dog to a veteran
