"Pick a method and stick with it!" Sure, thats sound advice. Especially for beginners. But for those of us that want to know why a particular method works or how to overcome and even prevent certain roadblocks or snags from appearing, simply focusing on the "HOW" may not be enough.

Nate Czarnota of Iron Oak Dog Co. joins me to talk about the principles of dog training and how paying attention to learning theory can help you recognize what is actually connecting and driving your dog. Nate is a graduate from the NEPOPO Gold School and has since enjoyed helping teach others how they can have a better trained dog while improving their relationship with the dog by focusing on the "WHY."

WATCH HERE

  • A nice well behaved dog that also hunts
  • Piecing together a training program
  • Bringing concepts and principles to the NAVHDA chapter
  • Focusing in on the WHY rather than the HOW
  • Agreeing on the terminology in dog training
  • Using "room service" to reward steadiness (Really high drive dog owners listen up!)
  • Having your E-collar mean both stop and go!
  • Primacy vs recency
  • Forensic dog training
  • Both dog and handler BOTH are having fun
  • Teach first. Add pressure second. Clarity begets compliance.
  • NePoPo. Pressure predicts a reward!
  • Sequencing and classical conditioning
  • Reward structures and "The Talent Code"
  • Make them work for it!
  • A dopamine dog vs an endorphin dog
  • Reward variability and the dog anticipating the pattern
  • The power of the ritual
  • "Kicking splinters" and fighting to stay in behavior!
