We kick off with a chat about Kickstarter's rise to prominence - its funding of the Pebble Wristwatch and Light Table. Skim over the effect of Kickstarter on Open Source.
We then talk about the Raspberry Pi, and hopes that it will both create new smart electronics, and inspire kids to start coding like the good old days of the C64.
Finally we have a chat about Facebook's acquisition of Instagram, and what other options there could have been.
(During the show I mention a company doing an early version of open product development - I can't remember the name of it. Can anyone help? It was a French company, with lightbulb for a logo and I think it had a name that started crowd. This would be around 2007.)
UPDATE: The French startup was Crowdspirit - sadly it's been closed since 2010, but it was ahead of its time.
UPDATE 2: (October 16, 2012 by Michael Mahemoff). Alex originally created a bonus "HTML5 versus Native" episode for this one, as a separate feed item, on April 25 2012. I've removed it from the feed to make the numbering system consistent, i.e. so that the Nth episode in the feed is called "HNpod N". All of the same guests and titled HNpod 1.5 as it was recorded at the same time, with the description: "This is a short 'bonus' episode of HNpod - A discussion of HTML 5 vs Native Apps which I cut from last week's episode due to overrunning the 30 minute slot." I've captured a screenshot here and you can still play it here.
This is the first show and I am completely new to this. Let me know what worked and what didn't - be brutal. I want to improve - my email is on the left.
I'm aiming for a balance of guests - ideally one YC founder per show. Did we cover enough ground? Not go deep enough? Can you bear my Northern English accent?
