LSU head football coach Brian Kelly said his number one priority in the spring transfer portal window was the defensive tackle position. LSU was left with very little experience at that position after Mekhi Wingo and Maason Smith declared for the NFL Draft. Kelly and the Tigers were in on the recruitment of the top defensive tackles in the spring transfer portal window, but swung and missed again and again. Three-star transfer Philip Blidi left Indiana for Auburn while Simeon Barrow took his talents from East Lansing, Michigan to Miami, Florida to play for the Hurricanes. The biggest miss, however, was four-star Damonic Williams who started his career at TCU. LSU recruited him heavily but he eventually decided to commit to the Oklahoma Sooners. After Kelly's very controversial comments on NIL, anxieties rose about LSU's ability to land a certified, starting DT to bolster up the 2024 defensive line. As of Thursday, LSU got a guy. But is he THE guy?

Jay'viar Suggs, a three-star transfer from Grand Valley State, has committed to LSU. Coincidentally, Kelly coached at GVSU early in his coaching career where he spent thirteen seasons as the head coach. Can Suggs make the leap from Division II action to the SEC? Can he be a starter on the defensive line? While there are a lot of questions about Suggs' ceiling, what does he possess that other DTs on this roster do not?
