Susan Bernfield’s full-length plays include TANIA IN THE GETAWAY VAN (reading: Huntington Theatre Company Breaking Ground Festival, 2014; workshop: New Harmony Project, 2013); BIG HUNGRY WORLD (reading: EST First Light Festival, 2011); STRETCH (a fantasia) (productions: People’s Light & Theatre, 2010; New Georges, 2008; developmental production: Ice Factory Festival, Ohio Theatre, 2007; published by Playscripts); BARKING GIRL (workshop: O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, 2003; production: Chrysalis Theatre Company, NYC, 2012; published by Indie Theatre Now) and OUT FROM UNDER IT (production: Vital Theater Company, 2003; published by Indie Theatre Now). Her solo piece MY LAST CAR, developed with director Mia Rovegno, was in the 2014 undergroundzero festival; a solo musical, TINY FEATS OF COWARDICE, composed by Rachel Peters and developed with director Daniella Topol, premiered at FringeNYC in 2008, was presented in progress at the 2007 Adirondack Theatre Festival and has been performed in cabaret form at D-Lounge, Cornelia Street Café, and HERE.

She’s developed work at Playwrights Horizons, Magic Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Lark Play Development Center, HB Playwrights, HERE, Dixon Place and Peculiar Works Project, among others.

She is the recipient of a 2015 EST/Sloan Project commission, and has been a finalist for the National New Play Network’s National Showcase of New Plays, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, The Playwrights Center’s PlayLabs and Mill Mountain Theater’s New Play Competition. She is also the founder and producing artistic director of New Georges, an Obie Award-winning nonprofit theater in New York City. In this capacity, she has premiered 42 plays written and directed by women; serves as president on the board of A.R.T./New York and on the boards of the League of Professional Theatre Women, The LIT Fund and 3LD Art & Technology Center; is on the advisory committee to The Drama League’s Beatrice Terry Residency; and is the recipient of the 2014 Lilly Award for producing.
