I bet lots of us were afraid of being alone in the dark when we were kids, and some of us may still suffer from that. But there is another kind of darkness that is more sinister, more dangerous, even deadly, and the worst part is, those most at risk of perishing from this darkness, don’t even know they are in the dark. But there is a Light for those who seek it, and those who follow that Light never need to be afraid again. Joining us today with the teaching “A Light To My Path” is teacher and author of the book, Broken Yet Blessed, Kathi McCarty.

Table Talk Notes

John 1:4-5 | In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it…

1:9-13 | The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Contextual understanding:

John 8:12 | Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

The text implies Jesus said “I AM the Light” during the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. Mishna tells us that at the Feast large menorahs/oil lamps were lit in the women’s court of the temple. The glow could be seen throughout Jerusalem. Jesus pointed to Temple and said, “I AM THE LIGHT.” What a proclamation!

Without the light of the Christ & the gospel, we cannot know where we’ve been.

Jesus is the Light

John 1:4-6 “In Him was life (Gr: zoe – God’s fullest and abundant life) and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness; and the darkness did not comprehend (Gr: katalambano – to lay hold of) it.” (i.e. light is always greater than darkness)

Light scatters darkness

Complete darkness can be palpable & frightening. (Story of the caves…)

Jn 3:19-20 | This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”

A fascination or involvement in worldly things (esp New Age/outright sin) suggests a “love” of dark. Jesus vanquishes sin, spiritual blindness, oppression, death, hell & the grave, spiritual bondage.

Light gives warmth

Properly reflected light can raise the temp of an igloo from 0 to 45 deg F in 15 minutes! Warmth is often equated w/comfort God provides to grieving, rejected or oppressed.

Is 60:20 | “Your sun shall no longer go down, nor shall your moon withdraw itself for the Lord will be your everlasting light & the days of your mourning will be ended.”

Mt 11:28 | Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Light gives direction

Ever try to get from point A to point B in the dark? (Story of 3 wheeler.) Without the light of the Christ & the gospel, we cannot know where we’ve been, where we’re going or how to get there.

Ps 119:105 | “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”

John 12:35 | “A little while longer the light is w/you. Walk while you have the light; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.”

If we receive The Light…

  • We will never be lost! “If anyone enters by me, he will be saved & will go in and find pasture.” (John 10:9)
  • We will have the light of life “God is light & in Him is no darkness at all…” 1 John 1
  • We become light for others “You are the light of the world…let your light so shine before men…” (Matt 5:14a)

If we shine The Light…

  • He exposes the emptiness of this world.
  • He exposes the vanity of the pleasures of this world and materialism.
  • We can acknowledge that man was created to be a spiritual being.
  • We can show the reality of a personal God who is the answer to evil, injustice, and every other social malady.
  • We declare that the church of Jesus Christ is eternal.

Will you respond?

Matt 5:14b | “…so let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

  • Am I a reflection of the culture… or a reflection of Jesus Christ?
  • Am I in the world, but not of the world?
  • Am I proclaiming, defending, instructing and living as the light of Christ?

Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break; and all things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go, love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is YOU!
