Coach Derek Phillips reflects on his experience as the son of living legend Coach Lincoln Phillips, and as parent to budding athletes. Join me as he shares parenting tips and strategies.
Derek Phillips was born in Trinidad and Tobago but most of his upbringing was in Columbia, Maryland. His soccer career started in Howard County where he played for Atholton High School and represented the Maryland State Team. His outstanding play as a collegiate player at UMBC landed him a position with several Professional teams including Dallas Sidekicks, Cocoa Expos, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City, and others. The highlight of his career was when he represented his native country, Trinidad and Tobago against Republic of Korea.
He attributes his soccer career to the guidance received from many exceptional coaches including his father, Lincoln Phillips, world renowned goalkeeper and FIFA Coach. Upon retiring as a soccer player, he was excited to start a new chapter in his life and began the journey as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. His technical ability as a soccer player, fascination with the intricacies of movements of the body, he founded Inside Out Performance, LLC.
He has had the opportunity to coach the U-13 and U-16 Boys Super Y-League, Women's Soccer Team at Loyola University, Men's Soccer Team at Howard University, and proudly with local youth soccer clubs for the past 3 decades. His passion for soccer is evident in his positive attitude, and the time and effort he gives to any player he comes in contact with. Developing athletes is his #1 goal!
