The weaving industry in Kyoto originated between the 5th and 6th centuries. The name Nishijin derived from the Nishijin District in Kyoto, where many weavers established their workshops after the end of the Onin War (1467-1477). Nishijin textile features a broad variety of fabrics, such as gold brocade, damask, figured satin, silk gauze and velvet, along with elaborate and florid woven patterns using colorful threads.
