Der Benguela Strom vor der Küste Namibias ist eine der fruchtbarsten Meeresregionen der Welt. Kalte Meeresströmungen bringen nährstoffreiches Tiefenwasser an die Oberfläche. Das Gebiet ist bekannt für seinen großen Bestand an Fischen und Meeressäugern. Darüber hinaus spielen Küsten- und Schelfmeere wie das Benguela-Gebiet eine wichtige Rolle bei der Speicherung von Treibhausgasen im Ozean. Im Projekt GENUS (Geochemistry and Ecology of the Namibian Upwelling System) untersuchen deutsche Wissenschaftler gemeinsam mit Kollegen aus Namibia und Südafrika das Benguela-Auftriebsgebiet auf mögliche Veränderungen durch den Klimawandel.
