Artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace—what does that mean for the future of technology, venture capital, business, and even our understanding of ourselves? Award-winning journalist and writer Anil Ananthaswamy joins us for our latest episode to discuss his latest book Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI . Anil helps us explore the journey and many breakthroughs that have propelled machine learning from simple perceptrons to the sophisticated algorithms shaping today’s AI revolution, powering GPT and other models. The discussion aims to demystify some of the underlying mathematical concepts that power modern machine learning, to help everyone grasp this technology impacting our lives–even if your last math class was in high school. Anil walks us through the power of scaling laws, the shift from training to inference optimization, and the debate among AI’s pioneers about the road to AGI—should we be concerned, or are we still missing key pieces of the puzzle? The conversation also delves into AI’s philosophical implications—could understanding how machines learn help us better understand ourselves? And what challenges remain before AI systems can truly operate with agency? If you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform. Métis In Space

For the tenth-year anniversary of Métis in Space space space space - yes, seriously, it's been TEN FREAKING YEARS OF NO EDITS OR TECHNICAL SKILL - the crew reunited in Whitehorse, braving -32 degrees Celsius and watery beer to bring you the fourth episode of their longest-running season yet! Listen, 3 - 5 years for a single season is absolutely fine in the long run - 200 years from now no one will even notice. Joined by himbo producer and official MiS sommelier, Wyatt, this episode explores the 2024 film Kneecap, wherein "fate brings a Belfast teacher into the orbit of self-confessed "lowlife scum" Naoise and Liam Óg, [and] the needle drops on a hip-hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish language, they soon lead a movement to save their mother tongue." So cue up the film, give it a watch, and listen to a bunch of Métis degenerates blather on about it for at least as long as the movie itself - it's been a long time since the last episode and they got excited. Don't ask if these episodes are available anywhere other than Soundcloud - that's producer kind of stuff Molly and Chelsea can't be arsed about, and they're only paying their producer in exposure. Possibly via an airlock. If you've got cartoonishly large bags of money to help them into the 21st century - after all, they are confused time travellers - feel free to send it to metis.in.space[at]gmail[dot]com!…

Recorded during a season that may stretch over three or more years before its culmination, this episode of otipêyimisiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk resumes with Molly Swain and Chelsea Vowel viewing the 1979 film Nightwing where: A Masakai tribal deputy investigating the unusual killing of a horse is told by the high priest that he is summoning the Yewah god to bring the world to an end. When the high priest is found dead from similar wounds, the deputy must work quickly to put an end to the deadly menace. Bid adieu to 2020, that hell year, and kick off Season 6 of otipêyimisiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk with Molly Swain and Chelsea Vowel as they review "Recipe For Seduction," a 15-minute KFC and Lifetime mini-movie featuring "a young heiress struggling to choose between a wealthy suitor chosen by her mother, and the new house chef Harland Sanders." Somehow this also involves a lot of discussion about the work of trophy wives, and comparisons to various Star Trek series. In Season 5 Episode 9 of otipêyimisiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk, Métis in Space, Molly Swain, Chelsea Vowel, and guest Daisy "Shania" Swain, review Jeff Barnaby's "Blood Quantum" where "the dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi'kmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are strangely immune to the zombie plague." Atmospheric background noise (actually Molly's computer fan as her laptop gives up the ghost) adds annoying ambiance to this episode, making listeners want to rake jagged nails across their ears, but no amount of filters could get rid of it. In Season 5 Episode 7 of otipêyimisiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk, Métis in Space, Chelsea Vowel and Molly Swain reject all copaganda in favour of cops and Nazis getting smashed up by The Blues Brothers. Part 2 of a 2 part special pandemic interlude, your intrepid hosts showcase their Favourite Movie of All Time time time. Just over two hours focusing on Chelsea's love of The Blues Brothers. Extra EXTRA heretical (despite getting the Vatican seal of approval), more F-bombs than usual get dropped, maybe as many as the cop cars that get smashed in this film, so beware, this episode is NOT for the faint of heart!…

In Season 5, interlude 1 of otipêyimisiw-iswêwak kihci-kîsikohk, Métis in Space, we munch on breakfast carbs and down caffeine in order to recount our origin story, such as it is. Recorded to share with the Land Relationships Super Collective (http://www.landrelationships.com/), we decided that our MiS fans might want to hear we haven't fallen completely off the planet (unfortunately). Also, we realized we've told this story in a number of interviews, but never yet directly into your earholes! Listen as we make a 5 minute story last 25 minutes, the way only we can.
